A Gentle Tongue

A gentle tongue is a tree of life,
but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 15:4
Like the smell of smoke that hangs in the air
Long after the embers of the fire have grown cold,
So do words that are spoken in haste.

Like a haze that covers the horizon,
Words of anger cloud the mind long after being said,
Interfering with the gift of life God has given us this day.

Lord, let my words be filled with kindness and compassion
And may I not be afraid to use them with generosity.
Gentle Jesus,
Make my heart like yours.

Oh thank you for this wonderful poem prayer. It is so difficult to control my tongue especially when my temper flares. I need to pray this beautiful prayer often so as not to ruin His gift of another day. God Bless...

Thank MEM, I too understand the effects a a flaring temper. It is one of my struggles in life. A kind woman once shared a prayer with me that said, "Lord send me an angle for my tongue and a century to guard my lips that no ill will slip forth from me". This prayer comes to my mind often.

God bless

Thank You Daily Grace. Beautiful poem and a beautiful picture. Is the picture a scene from Medjugorje?

Lisa, I appreciate the simplicity of the last stanza, but also the courage it takes to ask God to use those kind, compassionate words generously. Thank you for sharing the scripture verse.

Thank you Ed. No, the picture is not of Medjugorge, but it does resemble a look of the hillsides doesn't it.

This is so well said, DG. The damage we do with our mouths can be terrible and your poem-prayer is beautiful!
