The Silent Witness

I had passed her many times before, we always smile at one another, but I had never taken the opportunity to speak to her. A small lady with soft gray hair, she couldn’t be any taller than about 5’1”. She has such a peaceful presence about her that you can’t help but take notice.

Like me, she walks everyday. And everyday, in her right hand, she holds a beautiful golden crystal rosary that sparkles magnificently in the sun, silently drawing the attention of anyone that might pass by. As she walks, her fingers work the beads as she lifts her prayers to the Lord. The sight of her silent witness moves my heart.

On this particular day, as we passed one another, I was moved to speak to her. “I can’t help but notice that every time I see you, you are saying your rosary. It always gives me such pleasure.” Gently, she lifted the golden beads to her lips and in a most reverent fashion she kissed them. “This one is for you”, she said. I felt so humbled, “thank you”, was all I could say.

We both continued our separate ways, no longer strangers, but spiritual sister in Christ , bonded through the love of our Lady.

"Dear children! God is allowing me along with
Himself to bring about this oasis of peace. I wish to call on you
to protect it and that the oasis always be unspoiled. There are
those who by their carelessness are destroying the peace and the
prayer. I am inviting you to give witness and by your own life to
help to preserve the peace. Thank you for having responded to my
call." BVM, Medjugorje, June 26, 1986

Only in heaven will we know the prayers offered for us~perhaps by people we did not even know!

So touching. She has probably held you in prayer before. Such a selfless gift to pray for another, especially a stranger. Very moving post. It also speaks to the fact that people's actions (not words) are most time, the very best example of Christianity. Beautiful post.

You are so right Jek,

Our actions always speak louder than our words.

By the way, your profile picture is just wonderful.

How beautiful, DG! People like this woman are "hidden treasures". Day after day their prayers rise like a sweet fragrance to the Lord!

Love it! What a blessing it is to be able to pray: to know we are really heard, and loved. What a blessing it is to have others pray for us. There is just nothing like prayer...

What a wonderful gift you received! And now, every time you see her you will remember that she held you in prayer and I'm sure you held her back! This is beautifully written!

God's grace pouring out once again. She didn't say "Thank you," or start with small talk. She said "This one is for you." Grace from God through Our Blessed Virgin Mother... Gosh...

Beautiful DG. There is a special place in my heart for the rosary, so meditative and contemplative.

Yes your readers are so right. We never know who is praying for us. Some who do not even know us but we will meet in heaven. John Paul II use to pray for everyone he met
